Best Classic Vintage Reverb Delay Impulse Response
So …. I got a call from MikeLikeRap‘s manager a few months ago asking if I’d mix and master an LP for one of his clients – took 5 minutes listening to the sublime chaos of Jesper Vervoort for me to hit the big Yes button. It’s not often you get to work with musical intelligence this deep – I mean – we all love pop, rap and rock music – but jazztronica filtered through a maze of found sounds – that’s a sonic poem writ high in the stars.
Producing and Mixing an LP
…… you need to be aware of costs and time management – because musicians are generally not aware of these things, so instead of reamping his guitar tracks through a gazillion amps and effects for 3 weeks – instead I made a plethora of Impulse Responses from the studio hardware – which sounded so good – and in some cases so crazy – I decided to release them as IR packs for other people to use for musical creativity and enhancement. These guys will make the blandest beat or vocal into something vibrant and unique – plus you can use whatever convolution verb you’re using (Melda – Liquidsonics or the free Convology XT etc) to stretch of compress them to fit your tempo – but it’s also the Tone of the units that is so pretty – especially the Melos Bucket Brigade and Wem Copycat Tape Echo sets.
So if you want beautiful tones that stand out from the crowd in your music productions – get some of These spiffing chaps in your daw!
Melos Bucket Brigade Delay Echo IR Impulse Responses
We’ve used these gorgeous vintage delay units in just about every production for the last 25 years – they are amazing saturators and add tone to any signal run through them …. Then we get to the delay side of things. You can get anything from regular repeats to trippy dub slaps to full on BBC Radiophonic Workshop feedback frenzy – and all points in between. 70’s Synths – half the sound was either one of these bucket brigade (or tape) delays and / or a spring reverb – they are literally the sound of 70’s synthesis – try it – run some of your soft synths through them – et Voila! – instant classic tones. Wem Copycat Tape Delay Echo IR Impulse Response
Jesper is big on tone – and very interested in spatiality – which is good because a lot of the tracks he brought in had a ton of additional sounds that needed fitting in to the mix space – which you’d traditionally do with reverbs – but I had the bright idea of making stereo IR images of the Copycat – so we ended up using them a lot to place elements of the mix in. The crazy feedback IR’s also added a lot of flavour to certain sounds which allowed them to sit in their own space and not step on other sounds which had the same frequency characteristics. They are literally things of beauty, and will enhance any audio you run through them. You can hear them Here:
